Acne Scar Removal Singapore: Causes, Types & Treatments

Acne scars can cause considerable damage not only to your skin but also to your self-esteem, confidence, and overall wellbeing. Acne scars tend to be permanent marks on the skin, with long lasting effects on your appearance and self-image. But with the emergence of new skin technologies for acne scar removal, it is now possible to effectively get rid of acne scars.

What causes acne scars?

Acne scars are caused by impaired skin healing after an acne breakout. When you have acne, inflammation occurs to contain the injury or infection. The inflammation could manifest as a pustule or cyst, which appears as a tiny pocket of skin filled with bacteria, oil, and dead skin cells. When the pustule or cyst swells and finally ruptures, your skin will initiate the wound healing and repair process. During the healing process, your skin forms new fibers of collagen to replace the damaged skin. Problems related with collagen production could then lead to scar formation. When your skin does not produce enough collagen, tiny craters could form in your skin. If your skin produces too much collagen, you can develop raised, thick, and wide scars. In both cases, your skin will look uneven and dull.

Specific Acne Scar Removal Treatments for Each Scar Type

Various treatment modalities for acne scars are currently available in the market but not all scar removal treatments may be suitable for your condition. As there are different types of acne scars, it is essential that you receive the scar treatment that is specific for you.

This is our approach at Om Aesthetics Clinic — we focus on accurately treating your acne scars through customized treatment plans. All medical treatments are administered by our experienced and MOH-certified doctor, making each procedure safe and precise.

Ice Pick Scars

Ice pick scars are a type of acne scars that appear sunken and pitted. The skin looks as if it was punctured by an ice pick, hence the name. Ice pick scars form as the effect of the skin healing process when you have acne. Severe acne breakouts usually result in ice pick scars. People who have weak skin integrity and tend to scar easily are more prone to having ice pick scars.

Ice pick scars are usually deep and narrow, making them more severe and complicated than other types of acne scars. Home remedies and over-the-counter beauty products are generally ineffective versus ice pick scars. Skin experts recommend acne scar removal procedures such as subcision and laser treatments to effectively reduce the appearance of ice pick scars.

Rolling and atrophic scars

Rolling and atrophic scars are formed when the skin fails to create new layers of healthy tissue after an acne breakout. Instead, uneven bands of scar tissue accumulate under the skin. Because of the lack of enough tissue, small pits form in the skin. These tiny craters in the skin could be wider than 4 to 5 millimeters. The uneven texture results in a sunken or wavy appearance, giving the illusion that the skin is rolling, hence the name “rolling scars”. Rolling scars are more likely to develop in the areas of the face with thick skin, such as the jaw and lower cheeks.

In some cases, rolling scars become less obvious through time. However, in most individuals, rolling scars tend to become permanent flaws of the skin. The good news is that several procedures acne scar removal are now available at Om Aesthetics Clinic to treat and effectively reduce the appearance of rolling scars.

Boxcar scars

Boxcar scars appear as circular or oval pits in your skin and have sharp, vertical edges. As with other acne scar types, boxcar scars form during the acne healing process. Boxcar scars develop when your skin does not have enough collagen to replace the damaged tissues due to acne. Cystic or nodule acne, in which hard cysts develop under the skin, have been linked to the formation of boxcar scars.

The depth and size of boxcar scars make it very difficult to completely get rid of them. Over-the-counter beauty products, home remedies, and even medications have been ineffective in reducing the appearance of boxcar scars. Currently, the recommended acne scar removal regimen for boxcar scars is the combination of several non-invasive procedures that promote skin remodeling and healing.

Hypertrophic scars

A hypertrophic scar is a raised, thick, wide scar that forms during abnormal wound healing. Injury to the skin, such as acne breakouts, can result in the formation of a hypertrophic scar in people with unusually high levels of collagen during the skin repair process. The overproduction of collagen causes collagen fibers to accumulate, resulting in a raised, thick scar.

The main treatment approach for hypertrophic scar removal is corticosteroid injection. Here at Om Aesthetics Clinic, Dr. Neil will carefully examine your skin condition and determine the right dose of corticosteroid injections for your hypertrophic scar.

Post inflammatory erythema

Post-inflammatory erythema, also known as post-acne erythema, refers to red or pink patches on the skin after an acne breakout. Inflammation is the natural response of the body to injury and infection. In some individuals, however, inflammation itself results in undesirable effects. One of these effects is post-inflammatory erythema.

Post-inflammatory erythema occurs when the flow of blood during inflammation is interrupted. The blood vessels may become dilated or damaged during the inflammatory process, resulting in the reddish marks on the skin. Post-inflammatory erythema is common among people who are prone to acne because acne and the subsequent skin repair process are triggers of inflammation.

Treatment of post-inflammatory erythema can be done through medications. However, it could take time before you notice visible results. For faster results, Om Aesthetics offers several non-invasive skin treatments for post-inflammatory erythema. These treatments have minimal downtime and you can see visible results after just 2-3 sessions.

Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is another skin condition that can happen after your skin has healed from acne. When you have post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, your skin produces extra melanin as a response to irritation or injury, such as acne. The accumulation of melanin in your skin results in the visible tan, dark brown, or grey patches in the skin. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is more common and more severe in individuals with darker skin.

Laser treatments such as Clarity 2 Laser and Pico Second Laser can help reduce the appearance of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation by breaking down the melanin pigment to clear the skin. The Om pigmentation cream, which is formulated specifically to reduce dark spots, can also help you to get rid of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
